12/6/11- The Messiah's Pre-existence Prophesied

12/6- Day 10- Light the first two candles. His Pre-Existence- Micah 5:2; Colossians 1:7; John 8:58 (Jn. 17:5,24; Rev. 1:1,2; 1:17; 2:8; 22:13)

2"But thou, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall come forth unto Me He that is to be ruler in Israel, whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting." (Micah 5:2)

“Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” (John 8:58)

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.(Colossians 1:17)

(Adoration of the Shepherds Gerard Von Hornhorst 1622)
Thoughts: Jesus was not created when the baby inside Mary was conceived. Instead he was incarnated- His being was made flesh and accommodated to human form. Micah speaks of the Messiah coming to Bethlehem, but the prophet also says his origins are from of old- everlasting. Micah may not have realized what he was saying, but what prophet (or really what mortal) truly did? The meaning is clear in the fulfillment of Jesus- who was not just from the Davidic line, but also from everlasting. God’s coming to earth was not a fly-by-night thing, but an important plan to bring fallen humanity back to Himself.

Prayer: Thank you for your forethought and everlasting love, O God. Help me to respond in love for you this advent.
